Hellen Keller

Hellen Keller

Hellen Keller, who was rendered deaf and blind after an acute illness when she was 19 months old, become an iconic symbol of the human capacity to overcome even the most extreme obstacles. With the help of her teacher, Anne Sullivan, she transformed her world from one of darkness and isolation into a life of rich and meaningful self-expression. She became a celebrated speaker, author and activist and an inspiration to many.

Here is an account of one of her public lectures from the weekly Dunn County News:

A message of optimism, of hope, of good cheer, and of loving service was brought to Menomonie Saturday—a message that will linger long with those fortunate enough to have received it. This message came with the visit of Helen Keller and her teacher, Mrs. John Macy, and both had a hand in imparting it Saturday evening to a splendid audience that filled The Memorial. The wonderful girl who has so brilliantly triumphed over the triple afflictions of blindness, dumbness and deafness, gave a talk with her own lips on “Happiness,” and it will be remembered always as a piece of inspired teaching by those who heard it.”

In astro.com’s astrodatabank, Hellen Keller’s birth data is rated “DD”, for ‘dirty data’. There is no authoritative and documented birth time, with conflicting information being offered by different sources. Hellen Keller’s chart is drawn for 4:02pm on her astrodatabank page, albeit that a time of 5:00pm, from astrologer Myra Kingsley, is also recorded in the source notes. This 5:00pm birth time gives the Ascendant as 7 degrees Tropical Sagittarius (or 15 degrees Sidereal Scorpio) which is very close to the ‘royal’ fixed star Antares.

This is curious, since according to the Rosicrucian astrologer Max Heindel, as well as Elsbeth Ebertin, Antares is ‘unfortunate for the eyes’. I also noticed that Elsbeth Ebertin notes in her book Fixed Stars and Their Interpretation, that Hellen Keller had Antares rising, which is a significant further affirmation that the 5:00pm birth time has been considered correct, or at least plausible, by astrologers other than Myra Kingsley.

One further curious coincidence regarding the possible Antares Rising chart for Hellen Keller is the fact that the illness that robbed her of her sight and hearing occurred as the transiting North Node (Rahu) arrived at a Conjunction to her Ascendant (and thus Antares, the ‘Heart of the Scorpion’). Speaking of the Nodes, there may also be some significance in the close Conjunction of the Sun and South Node in her natal chart.

Tropical/Placidus on the left, Sidereal/Whole Houses on the right

Whether you use the 4:02pm or the 5:00pm birth time it yields a Sidereal Scorpio Ascendant, which works well, placing Saturn in Aries in the 6th House if you use Whole Sign Houses. Illness causing damage to the brain is clearly described. The Ascendant lord, Mars, is debilitated in Cancer, but 1st lord in the 9th House points to a person who is noble, principled, and even one who will teach and inspire others. Mars in the 9th House attests to her passionate advocacy for worker’s rights, the rights of the disabled, women’s right to vote, and anti-militarism.

Sun in the 8th House in itself can describe a world of darkness and traumatic experiences that can result in a sense of alienation. Whatever the specific rising degree may be, the Sidereal Scorpio Ascendant is convincing.
